A thought crossed my mind while working on a sketch.

What is the design process for your work? Do you study the references provided to you by the commissioner? Or do you make sketches of the creature you're going to model to get a feel for its shape(s)? Or do you start making the model off the bat?

Just a small bit of curiosity.

If it's a character of someone else's for which I have good reference art, I just go ahead and model. I don't usually make more sketches.

And if the character does not have any good reference art? I imagine that makes your job much more difficult than it needs to be.

Well, depends. If I am to design the creature for the buyer, it's a different type of commission. It's more of a back and forth of concept ideas, and takes longer. And that's before I even start the final sculpt. So, that would be a different fee. But sometimes the buyer might say 'do what ever you want', and I Just go nuts! But the risk there is, what I like, might not be what they want for their character. So, it's good to have art before hand.
